Since being elected in December 2017 the new Board of the SBA has been working hard and we are now pleased to announce that the long awaited 4 new courts at the Sandringham Family Leisure Centre has taken a significant step forward. Architects have been appointed and will start the Concept Design Phase in the next few weeks. With everything going to plan the SBA will be looking to start competition games in our new facilities in October 2020 for the launch of the 20/21 Summer Competition.
The project was given a significant boost last week when Bayside City Council voted unanimously for the proposed Sandringham Golf Course redevelopment to proceed to the detailed design and Town Planning Permit phase. The golf course project allows for the return of land adjacent to the Leisure Centre for the addition of four new courts, additional parking, and enhance traffic management with direct access to the Centre via Reserve Road.
The additional land provides an opportunity for the courts to be built with minimal tree removal, vegetation and environment impacts which previously had created significant concern for the project’s time frame and possible viability.
Both the golf course and basketball courts project will need to go through Town Planning and other statutory processes which could delay construction.
The new courts will be co-funded by Bayside City Council and the SBA and both groups will be working to secure significant State Government funding towards the project. Over the coming months the Board of the SBA will develop a comprehensive business plan to ensure the SBA can meet its funding obligations and will be looking to the SBA Community to get behind this exciting project.
