Despite suffering a loss against the Sydney Uni Sparks in the final game of the regular season, the Sabres SEABL women head into Saturday Night’s Elimination Final against the Melbourne Tigers full of optimism.
A 12-8 record for the season was good enough for 7th position on the ladder (losing out on fifth position due to a three-way tie with Melbourne and Diamond Valley) and sets up an Elimination Final clash against the Melbourne Tigers.
The Sabres have been led all season by the outstanding Rachel Jarry, averaging 17.8 ppg, 4.4 apg and 8.8 rebs per game. Two-time Opal Jarry missed the game against the Sparks due to appendicitis and is a game time decision for this Saturday’s final. Her absence against the Sparks was keenly felt with the Sabres struggling to score 56 points.
Jarry has been backed up by a supporting cast including local Sabres product Eilidh Simpson (who also missed against the Sparks), Hannah Kaser, Alex Delaney and Jess Bygate. All are averaging double figures in points.
Simpson joined the team after spending last season in Europe and represented Great Britain at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Bygate is in her second year with the Sabres and also represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games. Delaney joined the team after her four-year college career at St. Francis in Brooklyn ended earlier this year.
Saturday Night’s clash against the Tigers will be the first time the Sabres women have made the playoffs since 2013, a great achievement for the club after a couple of years in the playoff wilderness.
Having split the regular season home and away series 1-1 (Melbourne has head to head on the Sabres) the game promises to be a tight one. The Tigers mauled the Sabres 90 – 68 back in early May, but the Sabres returned the favour recently at home 80-66. The Tigers have been led by 2018 SEABL Defensive Player of the Year Louella Tomlinson, and WNBL stars Rebecca Cole and Monique Conti. The Sabres will need to curb their influence if they are to have any chance of getting a win and advancing to the second round of the playoffs.
